Guatemalan National dies after being pulled from El Paso border canal

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A Guatemalan woman drowned in a canal Monday night in El Paso’s Lower Valley.

The El Paso Fire Department, with the help of the El Paso Police Department, pulled a woman and a man from the canal at about 11 p.m. on Monday at the Border Highway and Yarbrough.

Officials told KTSM that the man was alive when he was saved, however, the woman was unresponsive. Emergency personnel was able to revive her on the way to the hospital where she was listed as having life-threatening injuries.

An El Paso Police Department news release later confirmed the woman died at University Medical Center. The Crimes Against Persons unit is investigating the case.

“The 911 call was made by a male claiming to have been in the company of the deceased when she was swept away by the current as they were crossing the canal,” the release said.

KTSM was told Border Patrol was on the scene as well.
