Mother and child die trying to cross Rio Grande in South Texas

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas — Border authorities said a Honduran mother and her toddler died while trying to cross the Rio Grande near Brownsville.

The Honduran government identified the victims as 26-year-old Idalia Yamileth Herrera-Hernandez and her 21-month-old son Iker Gael Cordova-Herrera.

The Honduran Foreign Ministry Official said Hernandez had crossed the border a few months ago. However, after making her request for asylum she was sent to Matamoros, Mexico, to wait for her court date.

The official said after several months of waiting in Mexico, Hernandez decided to cross the Rio Grande again last week leading to her and her son’s death.
