El Paso greenlights ‘Cite and Release’ program for small marijuana offenses

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Individuals arrested for possession of small amounts of marijuana will only be given citations beginning in September.

The El Paso City Council on Tuesday approved the so-called “Cite and Release” program, which will apply to Class A and Class B misdemeanors, including possession of fewer than two ounces of marijuana.

Those caught will instead be issued a citation to show up to court at a later date.

City officials said arrests for misdemeanor possession of marijuana are a significant drain on police department resources.

The Cite and Release program passed with seven “Yes” votes. City Rep. Claudia Rodriguez abstained.
