EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized a shipment of thermometers that were not approved by the FDA on Wednesday at the Bridge of the Americas in South El Paso.
Mexican cold ‘n’ flu meds seized from man who planned to resell online, CBP says
Officers inspected items in a shipment that were manifested as pyrometers, or infrared forehead thermometers, with a value of more than $7,000.
Officials said the thermometers were found to be non-compliant with the Food and Drug Administration regulations.
“As part of trade enforcement and compliance, officers are constantly on the lookout for counterfeit and non-compliant products,” said CBP El Paso Director of Field Operations Hector Mancha. “These thermometers may not measure body temperature accurately and could give false readings; this could have serious consequences.”

CBP said health-related products are presented daily for import and that it is U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s mission to ensure only those that meet federal safety requirements enter the American commerce.
Last month, a man tried to cross with a large quantity of over-the-counter cold and flu medications, as well also bottles of diluted Clorox, that he planned to resell online.
A week prior, CBP officers seized a shipment of cleaning supplies that were also tampered with and prohibited for sale in the U.S.
“In the current environment, it is reprehensible that someone would attempt a scheme like this to prey upon the concerns and fears of our community, likely for financial gain,” Mancha said at the time, referring to growing concerns over the coronavirus crisis. “Our officers remain focused and attentive to all threats they may encounter.”
The shipment of thermometers was seized pending further investigation, according to authorities.
