Mayor of Las Cruces urges residents to stay away from El Paso during holiday weekend

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (KTSM) — In a Twitter video message this week, the mayor of Las Cruces, N.M. urged Southern New Mexico residents not to visit El Paso, Texas, during the Memorial Day weekend.

Mayor Ken Miyagishima pointed to the growing number of COVID-19 cases and deaths in El Paso as the reasons why Las Cruces residents should not visit El Paso — about 40 miles to the south — during the Memorial break.

As of noon Saturday, the City of El Paso Department of Public Health confirmed 2,265 cases and 58 COVID-19-related deaths.

As of Friday, Doña Ana County, where Las Cruces is located, had 370 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and only two deaths.

Miyagishima said if Las Cruces residents work in El Paso or need to visit someone, then it would be fine, but said residents should reconsider shopping or dining out in El Paso.
